Finger Waves And A Wee Give Away
Lately I feel like i'm starting to master pin curls. Don't get me wrong, there fab and flirty and fun. However I've gone back o the dark side and something a little more slick and sophisticated is what I am after... The ultimate 1920's hair do!
After doing alot of research, I found that Finger waves and Marcel waves are easily mixed up. So lets set the record straight, as they do pretty much the same job, however the method is different.
Marcel waves were named by Francois Marcel, a 19th century French hairdresser who invented the process in 1872. It revolutionized the art of hairdressing all over the world and remained in vogue for over fifty years, making a fortune for Mr Marcel.
Marcel waves can be seen today on the re carpet and also in such period movies like The inglourious basterds and The Notebook.
Marcel's method involved, initially, a rectangle iron, crimping the waves in place. What I love the most about the history of Marcel's is that he was a hairdresser for the more poorer classes, and when he first wanted to practice this method, he had to do it for free, as people thought it was obscene. However the finished product was soon strutting around the streets and Marcel made his way as a true artist.
Finger waves were started in the 1920's, to soften the appearance of the blunt flappers bob, they are constructed into an 'S' shape whilst the hair is still wet and can be secured with the help of bobby pins.
It is these finger waves that I have been practicing for three reasons
1) Its kinder to my hair, which needs all the help it can get at the moment.
2) (in my opinion) Its more of an art compared to Marcel waves.
3) I dont own the correct heating irons anyway!
Here is the best tutorial I ave found so far, Yes she talks to someone else at one part , but it is clear what she is doing and for a first time waver I found it easy to follow.
Of course, I'd love to hear what you have to say about Waves. Do you like them? Have you tried them? Perhaps you have some interesting facts I have missed out or maybe you have some top notch tips?
Now for a little giveaway.... I found these pins recently, which kick started my finger wave pondering. These pins are ghastly colours but are long and strong. The tutorial above says not to use pins as they create more of a dent, however have you seen how hard she is having to hold her clips from wave to wave? I think because of the strength of these they are good to start out with, plus the dent may be the only thing you achieve to begin with, so you can always 'cheat' and iron in the curls, using the dents as markers and voila! marcel waves! heheh.
Secondly is this cute little plush diary... I'm a sucker for leopard print. If , like me, your new years resolution is to be more organized...and you haven't yet... its still not too late. For the organized ones of you, perhaps you know someone that needs a little hint.
All you have to do is post a comment on the bottom of this post an follow. It would also be nice if you put a post on your blog so that other bloggers have the chance to win too. Lets not be greedy now :)
